This piece started with a conversation with my sister. She mentioned she had bought a Venus flytrap, and that was enough to get my imagination going. The image popped straight into my head and stayed there all day until I finally sat down and made it.
I've always loved Venus flytraps because they already look strange and unreal, like something from a film. As soon as I imagined this giant plant standing beside a small, calm little girl, I instantly thought of Little Shop of Horrors and Audrey II. There's something funny but also slightly creepy about a plant that looks like it could suddenly come alive and ask to be fed.
I wanted the artwork to feel playful with a little bit of weirdness to it. The girl stands there so calmly, holding a tray of insects and vegetables as though feeding a giant carnivorous plant is completely normal. That mix of innocence and weirdness is something I'm always drawn to in my work — and honestly, this is one of my favourite pieces I've ever created.
Even though the plant looks big and dramatic, I didn't want the piece to feel scary. I wanted it to feel curious, imaginative, and a little unexpected — almost like a scene from a strange fairytale.
For me, this piece is really about how ideas can grow from the smallest things. One little comment about a houseplant turned into a full picture in my mind. Sometimes ideas just arrive like that and won't leave you alone until you create them.
